Karla Jo Maurer, age 60, of North Mankato, passed at home surrounded by family and friends on March 2nd, 2023.
Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 10th, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Mankato with a luncheon to follow at the church. Visitation will be Thursday, March 9th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to the service at church.
Karla was born on October 21st, 1962, in Gaylord, MN to Donald and JoAnne (Isenberg) Martens. She graduated from Henderson High School in 1981. Karla graduated from Mankato State University in 1985 with her BSN-RN. Karla started her nursing career in Bakersfield, CA in 1985 and returned to MN and worked at the University of Minnesota transplant unit in 1986. In 1988, Karla started working at Immanuel St. Joseph’s Hospital in labor and delivery and worked there for more than 20 years. She then worked in home care connecting with the Haag family in the Courtland area. She worked at River’s Edge Hospital in St. Peter and taught at Rasmussen College. The most welcomed phone call of her career came from the Mankato Clinic. She worked in OB education at the clinic and that job came with so much more than a paycheck. She was a wonderful medical professional and connected with coworkers that evolved into lifelong friends. Karla retired in January of 2023.
On September 2nd, 1989, Karla was united in marriage to Jeff Maurer at the United Church of Christ in Henderson, MN. Karla’s children, grandchildren, and family events were her most treasured. Karla and Jeff attended numerous musical concerts over the years. She was involved in multiple sporting activities and was an avid fan of Minnesota sports. During high school she was involved in band, track, volleyball, and basketball. After high school she was active in softball, volleyball, bowling, and recreational walking. Karla enjoyed needlework, crafting, reading, puzzles, and card club.
Karla is survived by her husband, Jeff; children, Jeanne (John) Maurer-Schlack, Michael Maurer and fiancé, Alicia Accetta, and Anne Maurer; grandchildren, Cooper and Adelyn; mother, JoAnne Martens; siblings, Karen (Mark) Brandt, Patti (Dave) Martens-Carter, and Greg (Mary) Martens; brothers and sisters-in-law, John (Jane) Maurer and Jim (Judy) Maurer; multiple nieces and nephews; and special friends, Cheryl Blaschko and Jody Block. She was preceded in death by her father, Donald; father and mother-in-law, Ole and Lucy Maurer; grandparents; and numerous aunts and uncles.
