Keith Joseph “Joe” Carlson of St. Peter died in his home on October 8, 2020 following a brief illness. He was 82.
Originally from White Bear Lake, MN, Joe graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1960. Following graduate studies at Iowa State University and earning a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, Joe returned to St. Peter where he taught paleontology and geology at Gustavus for 36 years.
He was a lifelong, year-round fisherman and a perpetually optimistic gardener. In retirement, Joe helped organize the St. Peter Community Garden, was a longstanding member of a weekly gathering for Gustavus staff and faculty retirees (lovingly nicknamed the “Geezers”), and volunteered with the Mankato Area Lifelong Learners, among other pursuits.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marjorie “Marge” Carlson; brother and sister-in-law, John and Donna Carlson of White Bear Lake, MN; son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Michelle Carlson of Chelmsford, MA; and daughter, Nell Carlson of Somerville, MA.
At his request, no services will be held. Those wishing to give a gift in Joe’s memory are encouraged to contribute to the Gustavus Fund for Gustavus Adolphus College.
