Larry Lee Allen, age 77, of Mankato, died Tuesday, March 23, 2021. He enjoyed his longtime residence at Hillcrest Health Care Center where he was treated like family for 19 years.
Larry was born to Earl Francis and Marian Gladys (Johnson) Allen on August 26, 1943 in Albuquerque, New Mexico while his father served in the military. As a small child, he moved with his parents to Pipestone, Minnesota where he received his education. When he was 17 years old, he joined the Navy. Three weeks later, he was honorably discharged from the service. After he returned to Pipestone, he worked several odd jobs. In 1963, he moved to St. James, Minnesota where he worked for Tony Down. On March 29, 1966, he was united in marriage to Joyce Windschitl in St. James. Following their marriage, they lived in St. James. In 1967, Larry moved to Le Sueur, Minnesota and worked for Osborne Laboratories. Then, in 1968, he moved to the Twin Cities where he worked for National Food Company. In 1973, he moved to Delano, Minnesota and worked for the Rockford Bakery until 1978 when he became employed as the custodian for the Buffalo Schools. During this time, he was also the caretaker for some apartments. In 1987, he moved back to Pipestone, and in 2001, he moved back to the Mankato area.
Larry was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Pipestone, Minnesota. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children.
He is lovingly remembered by his four children, John (Sarah) Allen of Comfrey, Sandra Pierce of St. Paul, Janeen (Tad Ulrich) Allen of New Ulm, and Earl (Heather) Allen of New Ulm; grandchildren, Ryan (special friend, Rachel Bennett) Farniok and Jill Farniok; great-grandchild, Oliver Allen Farniok; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Delilah Anderson.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff of Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato for the care Larry received over the years and to Hillcrest Health Care staff who cared for him for 19 years.
Memorial service will be held at 11am, Saturday, April 3, 2021 at Northview ~ North Mankato Mortuary with visitation one hour prior. Private graveside service will take place at a later date at Old Woodlawn Cemetery in Pipestone. Please share a memory of Larry with his family online at www.mankatomortuary.com.
