“A good friend is like a four-leaf clover, hard to find and lucky to have….” -- Irish Proverb
Lawrence “Larry” Treanor, 85, passed away peacefully at Oaklawn Nursing Home in Mankato, MN on Sunday, November 26, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family.
Larry was born at Immanuel St. Joseph’s Hospital in Mankato, MN on October 19, 1938 to Eileen Marie Farrell and Erwin James Treanor. Larry spent his childhood in the Mankato hilltop area while attending SS. Peter and Paul Grade School, and later, Loyola High School, of which he was a 1956 graduate. During his senior year (1955) at Loyola, he began working at Butterfield Welding, which his mother owned after the early passing of his father. In the summer of 1964 while still working at Butterfield Welding, he started working evenings, teaching welding during adult night classes at Mankato West High School. In 1970, the Administrative Director at Mankato Vocational School asked Larry to come up and setup the curriculum and teach Welding at the school. Larry accepted the offer and completed a four-year degree from Mankato State College while working as an educator. Larry retired from teaching in 1996.
During this busy time in his life, Larry met his future wife, Darlene Ann, while spending a summer evening at the Steele County fair in Owatonna, MN. They met that night on a double date in 1960 and were married a year later on October 21, 1961. They had two children, Terry Treanor and Lisa (Treanor) Volk.
During Dar and Larry’s time off, you could catch them with family at their summer cabin on Ballantyne Lake, fishing and socializing and enjoying time with their grandchildren. Larry also enjoyed hours in the field hunting with family and friends and his beloved Water Spaniels. If not in the field, a game of ping pong wasn’t out of the question along with a sip of good Irish whiskey.
Larry is survived by his children, Terry Treanor and Lisa Volk (husband Frank); five grandchildren, including Cole Ward, Logan Treanor, Emma Treanor, Ashley Volk, and Kristina Volk; nieces, Jodi Staska and Jill Olson; and brother and sister-in-law, Barb and Bob Lewis.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Darlene; older brother, Michael; and numerous cousins and grandparents.
Per Larry’s request, there will be a private burial on Friday, December 1st at Calvary Cemetery in Mankato, MN.
