Leon Stephen Tacheny passed to his heavenly home on Thursday, September 15, 2022.
Visitation will be from 4 – 7 p.m. Tuesday at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary and one hour before the services Wednesday. Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday September 21, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Ss. Peter & Paul’s Catholic Church. Burial with Military Honors will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Leon was born to Leo and Hyacinthe (Thier) Tacheny on November 10, 1933, in Mankato, Minnesota. He grew up on the family farm and attended Tivoli School and graduated from St. Clair High School in 1951. He served in the US Army from 1952-1954. During this time, he met his “first wife”, Delores Engel, at the Kato Ballroom in Mankato. Leon swept Dee off her feet with his ability to span the floor to a good polka or waltz. Dancing and “pfeffer” continued to be enjoyable throughout their lives.
After their marriage on June 10, 1954, besides helping on the family farm, Leon was also “the milkman” for the St. Clair Creamery. The Tacheny family grew and in 1961, they moved “to town”.
Leon also made a career switch and became an assessor for the City of Mankato, First Federal Bank and then Blue Earth County. In 1977, Leon teamed up with Owen Viker to form Appraisal Services. He retired from there in 2003.
Leon was active in Kiwanis, Serra Club, Ss. Peter & Paul’s Church, Loyola Catholic School, and the Catholic Aid Association (Catholic United Financial) serving in various roles. He was also on the Blue Earth County Board from 1986 to 1998.
He is survived by his children – Rhonda (Doug) Martinka of Bemidji; Robin (Sharon) Tacheny of Andover; Terry (Colleen) Tacheny of Mankato; Karla (Mike) McAfee of Forest Lake; Lisa Killian of Minneapolis; Amy Cutler (Lake Crystal); 17 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren as well as special friends, Lois & Wilson Kobel and many other relatives.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Delores; their daughters, Mary Jo and Lori Jean; son, Douglas Lee; sister, Lorraine Carpenter; and brother, Dale Tacheny.
Memorials may be directed to Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Loyola Catholic School (Lori Tacheny Endowment), Mayo Hospice or the donor’s choice.
Thanks be to God for Leon’s life. Blessed be his memory.
