Lois Elinor (Gibson) Berg was born Dec. 24, 1916 in Pope County, Minnesota to Robert J. M. and Edith (Lorenz) Gibson.  She attended school in Sedan and Glenwood.  Lois was active in dramatics and had leading roles in both high school and college productions. She directed a college play and was a member of the Black Friars and Alpha Psi Omega, a national honorary drama society.  After graduation from St. Cloud Teacher’s College she taught in schools in Iowa and the following Minnesota schools: Sedan, Sanborn, Canby, Buffalo, Mountain Lake, and Comfrey.  She was a master teacher and beloved by many former students who kept in touch with her over the years.  On April 25, 1943 she married the love of her life, Joseph F. Berg, and they spent 69 wonderful years together until Joseph’s death at age 98 in 2012.  In 1951 they rejoiced at the birth of their son, Timothy Joseph Berg.  She was a loving mother who doted over her only child and fostered a lifelong love of learning in him.  After 35 years of teaching, Lois retired in 1978 and she and Joe built a home in North Mankato at 1600 Sherwood Drive where they resided happily for 25 years.

Lois belonged to 4H in her youth and was an adult leader in both 4H and Girl Scouts.  She was a member of the Minnesota Education Association, a charter member of the Monday Come 11 Extension Group in North Mankato, and a volunteer and officer for many years for the Greater Mankato United Way.  She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, where she served as a trustee and was a member of the Mayflower group.

Lois loved to plan trips and traveled with husband Joe to all 50 U.S. states, most of Canada, and 10 European countries.

She is survived by her son and spouse, The Rev. Professor Timothy and Dr. Bonnie Berg of rural Mankato; granddaughter, Desiree Berg of rural Mankato; grand son-in-law, Steve Goette of North Mankato; great granddaughters, Victoria Snyder and Emily Snyder of Sioux Falls, S.D.; sister-in-law, Lucille Lewey; and many generations of nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph and granddaughter, Danielle Goette.

Special thanks to all the family and friends who faithfully visited her in her later years and most especially the staff at Oak Terrace who tenderly cared for her over all the years and became her dear friends.
