Lucille Agnes Grothe, 88, life-long resident of Madison Lake, passed away peacefully at Riley Crossing Senior Living in Chanhassen, MN on March 30, 2023. Lucille, born July 24, 1934, was the youngest daughter of Adolph and Iverna (Miller) Fasnacht. She graduated from Good Counsel Academy in 1952 and from Mankato State College four years later with a degree in Elementary Education. It wasn’t long after, that Lucille met Lyle Grothe at a Friday evening event at Point Pleasant in Madison Lake. They were united in marriage on July 30, 1960, at All Saints Catholic Church in Madison Lake.
Lucille taught for 34 years in area schools including Gibbon, Wells and Cleveland. In 1992, Lucille received the Ashland Oil Teacher of the Year award. Even though she was very proud of this recognition, she was most proud of the success of the hundreds of students she had the privilege of teaching over the years. Her greatest satisfaction came when former students would stop her in the grocery store, a restaurant or shopping mall to let her know how much of an impact she had on their lives. After retiring, Lucille spent her spare time working as an enrichment teacher at All Saints School. The classroom was truly her second home. Lucille enjoyed reading, knitting, any kind of puzzle, shopping, every outdoor activity from mowing lawn to daily walks by the lake, spectating any sporting event, golfing, bocce, baking Lyle’s favorite desserts (there were many), winters in Bonita Springs, Florida, with snowbird friends, summers at the cabin on Leech Lake in Walker, MN and being an active grandmother to her 5 grandchildren. She always said she wished she had counted all the tennis matches, baseball, football, soccer, hockey and basketball games she had been to, cheering her grandchildren on and letting referees know when she didn’t approve of a call.
Lucille is survived by son, Gregory (Julie) of Bowling Green, KY; daughter, Leslie (John) of Chanhassen, MN; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Jordan) Gieselman, Julia and Jacob Grothe, Jonathan and Andrew Cadle; sisters Zita Rohlfing and Tilda Schneider. Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, 4 brothers and 4 sisters along with many other beloved relatives, friends and her “boyfriend,” Lyle, who she couldn’t wait to be reunited with after his death in September, 2022.
