Luella Maye (Werre) Vellenga Schlottman, age 84, of New Ulm, died Monday, December 21, 2020 at Cottagewood Senior Living in Mankato.

Luella was born February 8, 1936 near Tappen, ND to Christian and Esther (Janke) Werre. She graduated from Tappen High School and attended Jamestown Business College. On February 15, 1959, she married Richard Vellenga in Tappen, ND and they were blessed with two children, Susan and Bruce. They were married until Richard’s passing in 1969. After moving to New Ulm, she met and married Del Duenow in August of 1975. Luella later married Floyd Schlottman on June 14, 1980 in New Ulm.
Luella worked as a clerk at the Tappen Post Office, clerk at the House of Nutrition in New Ulm, and a receptionist at Haar Fiseure in New Ulm. Starting at age 14, Luella served as a church organist and pianist. Music was a passion throughout her life, and she also enjoyed singing and dancing. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Tappen and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan (David) Vellenga Martinez of Chandler, AZ; son, Bruce (Heather) Vellenga of Mankato, MN; grandchildren, Scott Martinez and Samantha Martinez; step-grandchildren, Ashley Mendez, Antonio Mendez and Marissa Byro; sister, Ruth (Gary) Nelson of Exeland, WI; and brother, Walter (Jeannie Cozad) Werre of Council Bluffs, IA.
Luella was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Richard Vellenga in 1969; husband, Floyd Schlottman in 2019; and brother, Alvin Were in 2000.
The family would like to thank all the nurses and staff for taking such excellent care of Luella at Cottagewood, Mankato Mortuary for helping us through this difficult time, and thank you to everyone for your memories and kind words. We very much appreciate them.
