I, Marlene J. Krogstad-Kunard of Mankato died of natural causes peacefully at New Perspectives Mankato January 2, 2024. I was preceded in death by my brother, Wayne Ask (Pam) (Billings, MT); loving husband, Marlin Kunard (Mapleton, MN); and my parents, Alfred and Olga Ask (Trimont, MN). I am survived by my stepsons, Chris Kunard (Amanda) and Mike Kunard (Sarah), stepdaughter, Laura Kunard (Jim McIntyre), granddaughters, Claire and Ella Kunard, first husband John Krogstad, Ask family members, and loving friends.
I was born Marlene Jeanette Kowalke on October 29, 1939, in Independence Township, Minnesota and raised in Trimont after being adopted in 1948. I graduated as class valedictorian from Trimont High School in 1958 and obtained a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota in 1962. I was a copywriter for Advance Sales Company in St. Paul before joining North Central Airlines in 1963 as a Passenger Correspondent. I remained in the airline business until retirement as Director of Consumer Affairs of Republic Airlines in 1985. I moved from the Twin Cities to Mankato and owned MJK Designs, an interior design business. I led a very interesting life. I served as deacon of the Church of Christ the Redeemer in Minneapolis for many years; was a charter member of the Society of Consumer Affairs Professionals in Business; was an appointee by Governor Al Quie to the Minnesota Board of Cosmetology; and can you believe I was an instructor for the Yamaha Motorcycle Learn-To-Ride Safety Program? I was a board member of the Worldwide Airline Customer Relations Association, conducting lectures and seminars throughout the world. I was privileged to have served for 12 years on the Board of Directors of the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and appeared in the Who’s Who of American Women and in the Who’s Who of Women in Aviation.
I was a great lover of anything I considered beautiful and useful, including the Bible, a good rifle, classical music, riotous colors, fine food and wine, and big dogs. My great passion in life, however, was my husband Marlin whom I called “my sole reason for existence”. I hope I am remembered for my ethics, style, and quick wit. Kiss today goodbye; point me toward tomorrow.
Our family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at New Perspectives Mankato and St. Croix Hospice for helping us through Marlene’s final days.
A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, Mankato with visitation one hour prior to service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your local animal shelter.
