Mary passed into God’s loving hands at her home on Friday, September 25, 2020, surrounded by her family.
Mary was born June 26, 1933, in Sioux City, IA to Patrick and Evelyn (Scanlan) O’Hara. Mary grew up in Tyler, MN and graduated from Tyler High School. She began her career as a nurse after graduating from St Mary’s School of Nursing of Rochester, MN (RN). She moved to Chicago and met the love of her life, Robert. They married in 1955 and were blessed with 7 children. Mary worked as a public health nurse for the City of Chicago and then with Swedish Covenant and Resurrection Hospitals. Mary continued her education at U of IL (Chicago) receiving her BS degree. In 1979, Mary, Bob and family moved to North Mankato, MN, where she worked at Hillcrest and St. Peter State Hospital until retirement.
Mary was a devout Catholic who dedicated herself to the Lord, her family, and volunteering. She was an active member in the River of Life. In her unassuming manner, Mary helped many people. Her wisdom, calm and gentle spirit will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Robert McVicker of North Mankato; seven children, Margaret McVicker of Apple Valley, MN, Joseph (Sue) McVicker of Cary, IL, Kathleen (Jim) Shabatura of Apple Valley, MN, John (Sue) McVicker of Vadnais Heights, MN, Kevin (special friend Marlene Braun) of Minnetonka, MN, Robert McVicker of Gilbert, AZ, and Colleen (Carl) Fritz of North Mankato, MN; nine grandchildren, Ryan, Erin, Joe, Mary, Katie, Alexis, Nicholas, Michael, and Annelyse; two great-grandchildren, Janessa and Weston; brother, Robert O’Hara of St. Paul, MN, cousin, Sister Peggy Scanlan of Baltimore, MD; and many nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Evelyn O’Hara; and brothers, Patrick and Thomas O’Hara.
The family would like to express tremendous gratitude to Mary’s special friend and caretaker, Lorraine Mueller.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Visitation will be held from 5-7pm, Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at Northview ~ North Mankato Mortuary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am, Thursday, October 1, 2020 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. There will be no visitation prior to Mass on Wednesday. Burial will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis at a later date.
