Michael Joseph Burkhardt, age 77, of Mankato, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2024. Born on February 19, 1947, in Charles City, Iowa, to Frank and Eileen Burkhardt, who instilled in him the values of hard work, dedication, and the importance of family, Mike grew into a man of strong character and warmth.
After graduating from Charles City High School, Mike pursued higher education at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he earned a degree in accounting. His passion for numbers and helping others navigate the complexities of finance led him to a distinguished 40-year career in public accounting. In 1990, he founded Burkhardt & Burkhardt CPAs, a firm that stands today as a testament to his professionalism, integrity, and commitment to his community. The firm, now managed by his three sons, continues to embody Mike’s values and dedication to service.
Mike’s commitment to service extended beyond his professional life. After college, he honorably served in the United States Air Force, spending four years at the air base in Minot, North Dakota, during the Vietnam era. His patriotism and love for his country were matched only by his devotion to his family.
In 1968, Michael married his soulmate, Virgene “Jean” Burkhardt, and together they shared 55 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and the joy of raising a family. Mike was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He took immense pleasure in reading, solving crossword puzzles, and dining out, but his greatest joy was spending time with his eleven grandchildren and great-grandson. He was their biggest fan, attending every sports event and school activity, always ready with a word of encouragement or a story to share.
Mike was also a man of faith, actively involved in his church and living his beliefs through his actions. He was a beacon of light and guidance to many, touching lives with his generosity, kindness, and unforgettable storytelling.
Mike leaves behind his wife, Jean; children, Jeff (Jeannette) Burkhardt of Annandale, Melissa (Dave) Sanvig of Fairmont, Greg (Jennifer) Burkhardt of Mankato, and Paul (Bridget) Burkhardt of Mankato; eleven grandchildren, Abigail (fiancé Justin Higgins) and Ryan Burkhardt, Morgan (fiancé, Tanner DeWar), Hannah, and Connor Sanvig, Megan (husband, Joseph) Dubbels, Thomas, and Katherine Burkhardt, Anthony, Andrew, and Alexander Burkhardt; and great-grandson, Kayce DeWar; four siblings, Dan (Julie) Burkhardt, James (Carol) Burkhardt, David (Diane) Burkhardt, and Elaine (Bruce) Oimoen; nieces nephews and their families; and a community enriched by his presence. He joins his parents in eternal peace.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 9, 2024, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mankato, with visitation from 4-7 p.m., Friday, March 8, at Mankato Mortuary, continuing one hour before the service at the church. Interment with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Mankato. Memorials are preferred to an organization of the donor’s choice.
Mike’s legacy is one of love, service, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of those around him. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of all who knew him.
