Sharon Louise Swenson, age 81, of Mankato passed away on Friday, October 4, 2019. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Bethel Baptist Church, Mankato. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Mankato Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
Sharon was born May 5, 1938 to Joel & Ella Bergstrom and grew up in Mankato. She graduated from Mankato High School in 1956 and graduated from Bethel College in St. Paul in 1962. She earned her masters degree from Mankato State majoring in Guidance and Counseling.
She was united in marriage to Vic Swenson on July 27, 1963. Together they had three sons, David, Stephen, and Mark.
Sharon worked at her church Bethel Baptist for most of her life. She loved life and was committed to serving her Lord & Savior daily. She had a heart for serving and worked on many committees and boards at her church. She loved her family and friends. Sharon and friends began Bethel Pre-School Learning Center and she served in that capacity for twenty-six years, until 1993. Later she worked at “Banks” for approximately ten years and enjoyed serving the workers and customers. She also participated in a bowling team the “Svenska Flickas” for several years.
She was a committed sports fan and followed her son’s sports activities, attending most sporting events during their school and college years. She enjoyed the Vikings and was knowledgeable of statistics of many players.
She loved to travel and took numerous family trips within her country. She also took several mission trips to Ukraine, as well as many family trips to Sweden.
Sharon loved her Swedish heritage. She spoke Swedish quite fluently and continued to take Swedish language courses at Mankato State. Consistent with her Swedish heritage she loved coffee and sweets. She served coffee and donuts to the congregation of Bethel Baptist Church for many years.
She became ill in 2013 and was in need of a caregiver during her later years until her passing.
Sharon is survived by her husband of fifty-six years, Vic; three sons, David (Jane), Steve (Sonja), Mark (Shannon); five grandchildren, Shelbi, Sam, Brianna, Nolan, and Katelynn, as well as many relatives in Sweden. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joel & Ella; aunt, Minnie Lindefeldt, and many relatives in Sweden.
She loved spending time with her family and friends. She always was positive and seldom had any negative criticism of anyone.
She will be remembered by all who knew her as a loving, inspirational and caring person who spent most of her life serving family and others.
Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer’s/Dementia Associations, or the Vic & Sharon Swenson Scholarship Fund at Mankato State.
