Shirley (Honerman) Adel

Shirley Adel, beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother died peacefully on Jan. 4 in Buffalo, MN.

She was born in Mapleton, MN, Aug. 4, 1937, to Esther (Denn) and Paul Carey. She married her first husband, Dwayne Honerman on Aug. 20, 1962. Together, they raised their family of five children in Worthington, MN.

After Dwayne’s death in 1977, Shirley married Richard Adel in 1981 and doubled the family size. The birth of their son, Ryan, expanded the family to 11 children in 1983.

Shirley demonstrated her devotion to her faith through her service to the church. She served at St. Mary’s Church as a Eucharistic minister, Bread of Life prayer group leader, Marriage Encounter and Lady’s Guild member, taught RCIA religious instruction, and organized prayer chain requests. She also served as an election judge and assisted each year with the community’s extension group.

Shirley was truly a gracious, supportive, and caring woman. She always sought to put others first and calmly accepted any crosses that came her way with patience and humility. Shirley encouraged her children to pray often and love and serve God, our neighbors, and our families.

She is survived by her husband, Richard; their combined 11 children:  Val (Jerry) Battis; Cheryl Morrissey; Clifford (Karen) Adel; Shannon Hafner; Conrad (Heather) Adel; Peter (Kate) Honerman; Victoria (Brian) Michaud; Robert Honerman; James (Marie) Honerman; Lynel (Michelle) Honerman; Ryan (Emily) Adel; 26 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; her sisters Pat (Mike) Hager and Judy (Butch) Bach; sisters-in-law Pearl Lantz, Brigitte Carey, Eileen Hocking and JoAnn Honerman; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by family members Daniel Battis, Bill Morrissey, siblings Bud, Lionel, Jim, and Mary Kay, and many brothers and sisters-in-law.

Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022, at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Mapleton, MN.
