Shirley Ann O'Connor

Shirley Ann O’Connor passed away peacefully at Vista Prairie at North Pointe at the age of 88 on November 22, 2024.

To honor Shirley’s wishes, relatives and friends are invited to join the family at a graveside service which will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Mankato, MN, on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at 2:00 pm.

Memorials may be given to the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association, Diabetes Association, or St. Jude’s.

The youngest of nine children, Shirley was born February 28, 1936, to Edward and Elsie (Plautz) Wersal. She remained a lifelong resident in and around the Mankato area.

Shirley was united in marriage to John O’Connor on July 2, 1955, in Mankato, MN. Her greatest accomplishment was raising her four children while holding the title of “homemaker” in her family. Shirley enjoyed playing Bingo, completing puzzles, listening to country music, watching “Gun Smoke”, bird watching (red cardinals were her favorite), and partaking in the many activities and celebrations over the years as a resident of Monarch Meadows. It was always a delight to hear Mom tell us how many quarters she won at Bingo or which exciting prizes she won at “Roll the Dice.” Above all of these things, the most cherished moments that brought the brightest smiles to Shirley’s face were the times spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving family members include her four children, Robert (Patty) of Mankato, Michael (Marlene) of El Paso, TX, Lynn (Joel) Matzke of Hixton, WI, and Patrick (Holly) of Mankato; grandchildren, Kevin (Mandy), Neil, Jacob, Dani Larson, and Katelyn and Alaina Matzke; two great-grandchildren, Cullen and Ashlyn; as well as nieces, nephews and friends.

Shirley has been reunited in Heaven with her husband, John (2007); six brothers; two sisters; and twin granddaughters, Megan and McKenna Matzke (2008).
