Viola Morrison, 98, passed away at Mapleton Community Home on Thursday, November 30, after a brief illness. Until then, she had been enjoying good health and a full, engaging life.
Born October 4, 1925, to Leo and Rosa Schwanke on a farm near Willow Creek, in the middle of her two sisters. A month premature, the triplets survived their first days bundled together near the kitchen’s wood-burning stove for warmth. Despite their tenuous start, all went on to lead full adult lives. The family belonged to St. John’s Lutheran Church, the center of a little German-American farming community near Vernon Center, where Viola attended school and was confirmed in 1939. She never seemed to have lost her “German” accent!
Viola Married Harold Morrison May 14, 1949 in Mankato. They made their home in Amboy and had four boys. George, Randy, Dean and Scott. Viola was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She will be fondly remembered in her work at the Amboy School as a kitchen assistant where she was called “mom” by many!
Outside of the home, Viola was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Post 276 Legion Auxiliary, and the Midnight Mother’s Club. She enjoyed any chance to be social and enjoy coffee with neighbors and friends. She and Harold took daily drives and most always had to cross the south bridge. Many will remember her ability to grab your arm and not let go until she was finished talking!
In the Fall of 2015, Viola moved into Heritage Place assisted living and then to Mapleton Community Home in 2020 where she passed peacefully surrounded by family. Viola will be greatly missed by her family that she so enjoyed being with when she could. She would always comment “now let's do this again more often”.
Viola was preceded in death by her husband Harold, her triplet sisters Violet and Verona, as well as her other siblings Laverna, Edna, Clayton, Laurinda, Jane and infant grandson, Aaron.
Viola is survived by sons George, Randy (Debra), Dean (Joan), Scott (Cyndi); grandchildren Steven (Sarah) Morrison, Angela (Matt) Eagan, Matthew (Susan) Morrison, Travis (Angie) Morrison, Tyler (Megan)Morrison, Elise (Colton) Savor, Lindsey Morrison, and nine great-grandchildren. Loved and adored by her family, she will be deeply missed, but live forever in our hearts.
The family wishes to thank the exceptionally caring, professional staff at Mapleton Community Home who tended to Viola in her last years and the Mayo Hospice nurses who assisted through her final days.
A celebration of life and family burial is planned for Spring of 2024.
